Mike Robertson

Director of Professional Excellence

Mike’s first degree in ‘Natural Philosophy’ (Physics) was gained at Aberdeen University and he has an MBA from Warwick University.
Mike joined the Safety and Reliability Directorate of the UK Atomic Energy Authority in 1985 and applied risk assessment tools and techniques to a range of sectors including nuclear, rail transport, construction and financial services. In 1997, Mike was invited to help establish Risk Solutions as a vehicle for offering strategic risk management consultancy, and in 2000 Risk Solutions was incorporated as a wholly owned subsidiary of AEA Technology.
Mike became Managing Director of Risk Solutions in 2001 and in 2006, he successfully led a management and employee buyout. As well as managing the business, Mike directed Risk Solutions’ work in the transport sector working for clients such as: London Underground, Rail Safety and Standards Board, Irish Rail, Department for Transport, Highways England, Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (Ireland). He directed all Risk Solutions’ work for the Highways Agency (now Highways England) over ten years, including development of their Safety Risk Model and Network Performance Model for the strategic road network. Outside the UK, Mike worked for the Irish National Roads Authority (NRA) on an assessment of road collision contributory factors and led the Irish Department of Transport Tourism and Sport (DOTTS) evaluation of the €1.5bn Railway Safety Programme.
Mike joined Bechtel in April 2017 as the risk manager for the National Project Management Organization which has the objective of improving the way that infrastructure projects are planned and delivered in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in support of the national ‘Vision 2030’ initiative.
He is a non-executive Director of the Major Projects Association Board and is a Certified Fellow of the Institute of Risk Management.
