Thameslink ProgrammeDesigning Out Waste: London Bridge Station
Summary
This case study explains how Thameslink Programme’s sustainability vision collaboratively challenged the design and construction process to reduce waste during the redevelopment of London Bridge station.
At London Bridge Station, waste profiling and segregation has led to a 98% diversion from landfill rate during construction and transport of 200,000 tonnes of waste soil via barge resulted in 60% carbon emissions reduction compared to road transport.
Also at the new station, development of an Operational Waste Management Plan and delivery of a brand new service yard has improved station recycling rates; prior to the redevelopment the station recycling rate was 43% (late 2015) but when the service yard was fully operational in 2017 and the plan implemented, rates improved to 70-75%.
