Predicting Burnout

Summary

A Global Cross-sectional Study into How Perfectionism, Resilience and Culture Combine to Predict Burnout in Working Adults

Burnout is caused by excessive workloads and depleted resources that can lead to serious psychological and physical health outcomes from unmanaged stress. Stress is increasing globally, elevating burnout risk. Perfectionism can also lead to burnout, but its likelihood could be countered by resilience, however investigation into their combined relationship with burnout is limited, particularly in applied workplace samples. Combinations of striving for, with concern over, perfection present burnout differently which may be explained by resilience. Resilience interpretations can also vary between independent and interdependent self-construal. Confounds in existing cross-cultural studies and increased workplace diversity among virtual and international teams indicate more cross-cultural analysis is needed as prior findings are unreliable and do not mirror real world contexts. This study responds to calls for more research in these areas and investigates burnout presentation.
