We’re pleased to welcome Transport Scotland as a new member of the Major Projects Association. We asked the team to tell us more about the organisation, its work across Scotland’s transport network, and what it hopes to gain from membership.

Transport Scotland – who we are

Transport Scotland is the national transport agency for Scotland, responsible for delivering the Scottish Government’s vision for transport across the country. As set out in the National Transport Strategy, our vision is for a sustainable, inclusive, and accessible transport system helping deliver a healthier, and more prosperous Scotland for communities, businesses and visitors. We are accountable to Scottish Ministers for delivering this vision.

The agency manages a comprehensive, multi-modal transport network that helps keep Scotland connected. We work on land, air and water to make journeys across the country safe, reliable and fast.

Transport Scotland maintains, upgrades and monitors the trunk road network across Scotland. We are also responsible for designing and delivering infrastructure projects, including dualling the A9 and A96 and upgrades to other vital roads across the country. We are also responsible for funding Scotland’s extensive rail network including any rail improvement schemes and for maintaining and upgrading the country’s ferries and ports that service many of our island communities.

The protection and enhancement of the natural environment is an important aspect of all our transport projects as well as our transition to a net zero transport system and supporting active travel schemes.

Transport Scotland is based in Glasgow with around 700 employees although a small number of staff work out of offices in other parts of Scotland.

What we’re hoping to gain from membership of the Major Projects Association

Joining the Major Projects Association will allow Transport Scotland access to a substantial repository of major project knowledge, lessons learned and research insights, and enable us to engage with senior leaders and practitioners from client organisations, government, industry, academia and the wider major projects community.

Membership will also help in the development of our staff through mentoring, networking, and professional development opportunities and contribute to the wider exchange of knowledge and good practice.

Overall, membership of the MPA would help strengthen the agency’s capability to plan, procure and deliver complex projects and programmes, while providing access to a trusted network of senior practitioners and independent, experience-based learning.

We’re pleased to welcome Transport Scotland to the Association and look forward to their involvement in our community.
